Top Tips for Renovating & Redecorating

Tessera know interiors.  We also know that however keen you are, however much you research,  the choices can easily get overwhelming.  We don't want the fun to be missing from your makeover, so we have a few tips to help you navigate your next interior design project.

Functionality is Key

Plan for how you use the space.  Look at daily use and also occasional use, (think Christmas and New Year) to fully see the design needs.  Don't sacrifice comfort for style, you should be able to balance both with your required lifestyle.  Always bear in mind a practical layout and use easy care material choices to make your day to day so much easier.

Start with a Statement Piece

Be brave! Whether it is seating or artwork, fabric or a vase invest in an item you love that will set the scene for the space.  This is about a definition of style and will help you focus the overwhelming choice available down to a manageable level.

Choose Timeless over Trend

Think long term and use quality materials that will wear well and suit altering styles.  The old adage of "buy better, buy once" very much applies.  Long lasting items pay for themselves many times over with constant use and generally are of a design aesthetic that will not date.  Natural materials particularly tend to age with grace and look better the older they get.

Consider Bespoke options

These will be the items made especially for you and your room.  A unique and well crafted item will bring quality and individuality not available off the shelf.  Soft furnishings in particular benefit from the care given by specialist treatment.  Well fitting blinds and curtains not only look great but can reduce energy bills through improved insulation.

Set a Budget

Before starting a project, take a look at your finances and realistically see what is affordable. A lower budget does not have to equal lower standards, you just need to get creative!  Spend the money where it counts, on the things you touch and use every day and save on the other areas.

Take your Time

Don't rush decisions.  It is totally acceptable to take your time and consider your choices.  If you have just moved in to a new home, live with it for a year and see how the seasons change the atmosphere.  You are then fully informed as to how your home responds to the environment and can adapt your plans to both maximise the positives and reduce the negatives.
